Why Google's site-specific search is not an ideal solution

As you probably know already, Google's Search operators allow users to search websites via Google search by typing "site:yourdomain.com [search term]" in the Google search bar.

For example, you can search this web site for "web design" by typing "site:sohosystems.co.za web design" into Google. Doing so will return results only from this domain.

That said, there are at least two drawbacks to Google's site-specific search:

The first drawback is that Google may not have indexed all your pages, so some content might be missed.

The second drawback is that users have to leave your site and go to Google to perform the search. This can be inconvenient and may lead to users not returning to your site after the search.

Overall, while Google's site-specific search can be useful, it is not a complete solution for website search functionality.

And that is why most webmasters prefer to have a dedicated search function on their sites.

Why Google Custom Search isn't the ideal solution

Yes, Google allows users to make their own site search engines using Google Custom Search, which they can then embed in their own websites, allowing visitors to search their content without leaving their sites.

In fact, we used a Google Custom Search engine here for quite a while.

Please TAKE NOTE that customizing the look and feel of your Google Custom Search engine will require an understanding of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

Google Custom Search, however, has several drawbacks:

The first drawback is that GCS may not index all your pages, especially if they are new or have low traffic, so some content might be missed.

The second drawback is that GCS displays ads in the search results, unless you pay for the ad-free version, which can be distracting and unprofessional.

The third drawback is that GCS may not provide the same level of customization as a dedicated search solution, making it harder to tailor the search experience to your users' needs.

Overall, while Google Custom Search can be a useful tool for adding search functionality to your website, it may not be the ideal solution for all users.
